Some years ago now, I was a member of the Manchester Area Wargames Society, and being reasonably adept at painting and model making, most display/participation games had my involvement.
The most significant of these games to me was a Pirate game in 15mm, which was a fun participation game. Not wanting to do things by half I set out creating a number of islands, collecting and painting ships and figures to play on a 12'x6' table.
